1959: Kissing The Beauty Queen

Marilyn Ruesch, 19, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Ruesch of rural Fulda, became Miss Worthington 1960, and is here shown getting kissed by Arlene Schoone and Judy Cruikshank, two other beauty queens.

    Not that I saw.

I know historically (in medieval times) kissing was a lot more common, but as far as the late 1950s, I don’t know.

Sometimes photographers are just looking very hard for a new, interesting pose, and maybe this one seemed like a good idea at the time.

Portrait photography is difficult; if people who aren’t trained or experienced do it you generally end up with a bunch of people lined up against the wall in a firing-squad arrangement.

Maybe this was just an attempt at being original and a bit different that didn’t quite work out.

It kind of looks to me like they’re smelling her ears.
