1960: The Draft Has Been Vital Since 1940

This 1960 Daily Globe editorial stated that conscription into the armed forces had been vital since 1940, and also stated that soldiers’ mandatory service "is not presently a time during which they must offer their lives and exist under fire."

The U.S. started training South Vietnamese in 1956 and the first Americans to die in the Vietnam War were killed in 1959. (PBS
