Teeeeechnically what you need to add is called an “anti-knocking” agent: lead was added to gasoline to prevent it from igniting on its own, which makes funny noises and hurts your engine. Nowadays, aromatics (compounds that include a benzene ring) are often added to prevent this.

    1. Has anyone ever told you you know too much?

      Kidding.

There are a lot of gasoline additives, which I don’t think people realize. Apart from ethanol. Most people know about that one now.
